Love this website as it brings back many fond memories of growing up in Longbridge, I used to spend most of my spare time trainspotting opposite the Austin Motor Factory, this was during the mid 1950s up to 1957 when we moved to Australia.

In 1960 I left school and started work in the
S & T Dept at New Street Station.
I did 6 months at Soho & Winson Green station then closed to passenger trains, but 1 special stop order was issued for me and the lines man from New Street to Winson Green.
serveral trip were made up the Harborne line, to Harborne station, and round to Perry Bar via Soho Poole. Soho Station was still intact and still had a signalman.
I then transferred into the Locomotive Dept at Saltley. which as a Fireman managed to cover the following lines.
Water Orton - Walsall -Dudley -Stourbridge Loco shed.. Camp Hill line on banker duties Washwood Heath to Camphill.
Longbridge. Central Goods via Five Ways.
Later on ! transferred to Monument Lane.
all diesels>
I had a trip over the Great Central line, which was a DMU but required a secondman because of the mileage.
Llandudno DMU a couple of times.
Regulars to Euston semi locals
London Midland run the same services now.
Next move was the the Dept closed and I was noved to New Street again.then made redundant
GREAT YEARS
